They were Idol worshipers Abdallah aka Slave of Al-lah (the-god), the Moon god of arabia or what do you think Muhammad was doing in an isolatated Dark Cave alone, if not practicing one of the idol ancient practice meditating to evil spirits in caves? There and then, he was attacked by a jinn that put great terror in him that he (muhammad) almost commit suicide.
